We've had a wonderful year full of events, in which we’ve learned many things from and about one another, developed HBP’s blog, and expanded our international partnerships to the U.S., Pakistan and across Ontario. HBP’s activities this year were featured in various countries including Israel, Pakistan, Canada and the US, and the blog has attracted readers from all over the world!

Now, Fannie and Freddie, being government agencies, faced restrictions on their size and trading activity. Consequently, they decided to do the bulk of their convexity hedging (described above) in swaps rather than in bonds, since swaps are off-balance sheet instruments, while bonds have to be reported. Every time the market sold off, Fannie and Freddie would be out there selling (paying) in swaps, in size. Swaps would therefore underperform bonds in selloffs; hence swap spreads would widen. (Note that the mortgage market is much larger than the government bond market; hence Fannie’s and Freddie’s trading actions, determined by the former, would invariably move prices in the latter.)

I couldn't sleep last night, so the post you made came to mind. ~ For some reason that was followed by the name ~ "The McGonagle". It has a nice ring to it and interesting reading in google. Of course after that there just has to be a little story attached, I have one in mind.. :)

The pledge to respectful dialogue was created by the PhotoVoice group to honour those who not only believe in respectful dialogue but also practice it on a regular basis. It is the group’s hope that this pledge will serve as a reminder of the world in which we would like to live and be signed by people who support the idea of respectful dialogue locally, provincially and globally.

Looking increasingly clumsy and vacant, he almost crossed a busy junction where the little man (or is it a woman?) had not yet turned green. A taxi driver yelled out. A cyclist swerved and swore. A drunk laughed. It was hard to believe this was actually the same Cossack who commanded so much power, who could ruin someone’s life with the tiniest squirt of ink from his pen. Getting closer behind him, I saw long white stains across his denim jeans and jacket, the kinds of marks left behind from sloppy washing. Was there no one at home to look after him? Had no one ever told him that a man of his age should no longer attempt to wear denim? How terribly sad.

Are there ways to reduce the disadvantages of short term volunteering?

Who is benefiting from volunteering abroad?

If you were a policy advisor, what type of policy would you suggest the South African government take in order to protect children from potential harm?

Do organizations organizing/facilitating such volunteering opportunities have a responsibility to tell participants of potential harm they could be doing?

What other questions does this issue bring to mind?

Mothers know little about the Alpine Loonies
They would faint to see those sharp drops,
their babies on icy tightropes, fast melting
And do they beckon French or Italian angels?
The impossible infants are now unreachable,

Book-wise, I've just finished reading The Group by Mary McCarthy for my book group. I could have sworn I'd read this before back in my student days (I think it is that kind of book), but when I came to start reading the other week, it was completely unfamiliar. (This has happened twice to me lately. I was convinced I'd read 'A Patchwork Planet' by Anne Tyler too, largely because it had been sat on my book shelf for years and I just assumed I must have read it at some point. I hadn't though. I think that's what you call a senior moment, which is a bit worrying, seeing as I am still 39. Doesn't bode well for my old age, does it?) ANYWAY. So it turned out I hadn't read The Group after all, and I must confess, I started reading it, feeling very disappointed. The cover has glowing quotes from Sarah Waters, Marian Keyes, India Knight, all saying how wonderful they think it is, and at first I thought I must be reading a different book. It felt really heavy-going, I couldn't keep track of who the hell everybody was and, REALLY ANNOYINGLY, the design and layout is awful, frankly, with page after page of dense, solid prose, with hardly a paragraph break in sight. Perhaps this is very shallow of me, but I find that sort of page layout really off-putting. Even when there is dialogue, there was no paragraphing, the speakers just run on from each other in one great lump. Call me an old fart, but I JUST DON'T LIKE THAT.

Perhaps the smartest thing Stelmach could do right now is to pick a fight with Ottawa. As long as he doesn't back down, it is an opportunity to establish himself as the defender of Alberta, fighting against the eastern creeps and bums who want our money. We can debate the merits of equalization until the proverbial cows come home, but this could be the beginning of a set piece of political theatre, and what better central figure is there than Ted Morton?

The Price of Spring does have more noticeable flaws than its predecessors. The pacing of the last third is rather slow, with a touch of monotony settling over proceedings as Abraham lines all his characters up for the final scenes. And while the outcome of the novel - and indeed the series - is superbly handled, there's an element of frustration as Abraham felt the need to add a largely pointless epilogue. Not only does this obscure what would have been a far more moving, natural ending to the novel, but it feels more like the start of a new novel than a true ending, and as such feels uncomfortably bolted on. It's a shame that the series ends on what feels like a weaker note than it could have done otherwise, but this doesn't detract from the overall brilliance of The Long Price quartet.

  12. After the success of the films and books, Universal and Warner Brothers announced they would create "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter," a new Harry Potter-themed expansion to the Islands of Adventure theme park at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida. The new land, promoted as the seventh themed "island" of the park, was built from land reserved for expansion outside of the park's original border, as well as from much of the existing "island," The Lost Continent.blikkenslager bagsværddamian x

  17. A young poet came to the magazine editorial office and said to the editor:
    - I'm sorry! I made a mistake and sent you the foodstuff bill instead of my poem.
-I thought it was a poem in modernistic language and sent it to the printing house - replied the editor.
